The preamp gain situation will be the same for those little standalone devices. And even with dedicated lower cost interfaces, the biggest issue tends to be driver performance (latency and stability), followed by low gain preamps that will have a high noise to signal ratio. Manufacturers aren't developing solid drivers for them to compete with their dedicated interfaces. Don't count on any of them having good performance as an interface though.
If you will only be recording yourself and only need two simultaneous inputs, one of those devices might be ok as a standalone unit for songwriting.
